Thresholds towards change

Thresholds towards change

As part of our sabbatical guiding practice, we put emphasis on the start of the sabbatical or pause. To intentionally carve out space and time to mark the step from one part of life into another one. One of the exercises we encourage clients to do is to find a threshold somewhere in nature. It could be an arch of a tree or a space between two big rocks. Our clients take the time to step through and to set intentions for their pause or sabbatical.

Thresholds can come in many forms in our life. It usually comes at times of significant change and marks the beginning of something different. It could be a new job, a new relationship, or a move across the country. Thresholds can also be there for internal changes like grief or renewed purpose for life.

For the past few months, I have felt a threshold approaching in my life. I didn’t really know what the change would be but now it is much more evident. However, while still deciding whether to keep moving forward, I found a poem by John O’Donohue saved in my Notes app from way back in October 2019. It so resonated with me again. Maybe it is my belief in the magic of life but it feels I saved that poem for this season of my life.

Like Spring secretly at work within the heart of Winter,
below the surface of our lives
huge changes are in fermentation.
We never suspect a thing.
Then when the grip of some
long-enduring winter mentality
begins to loosen,
we find ourselves vulnerable
to a flourish of possibility.
And we are suddenly negotiating
the challenges
of a threshold.

At any time you can ask yourself:
At which threshold am I now standing?
At this time in my life, what am I leaving?
Where am I about to enter?

This is just a snippet of the poem and I highly encourage you to read it all here. It gets even better! It is from his book “To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings
